Pin Description:
One of a series of pins sold to cast members only during Disneyland's 40th anniversary. There are fourteen pins in the series, released in three separate sets of five, five, and four pins. Each pin in the series represents an attraction that was closed and removed from Disneyland before 1995. This pin is a part of Set #2.This shows the Flight to the Moon attraction in Tomorrowland. Originally named Rocket to the Moon, it became Flight to the Moon in 1967. It was then updated to become Mission to Mars in 1975, but was closed permanently in 1993 during the Tomorrowland update and replaced by Redd Rockett's Pizza Port. The pin shows a red and white rocket lifting off against the backdrop of a yellow moon.
The trading card has the following caption:
"When Disneyland opened in
1955, the Rocket to the Moon was as futuristic a sight as could be imagined for that time. Towering 76 feet high, it took Guests on a simulated journey into space and back again. In 1967 it was redesigned as Flight to the Moon; later still, in 1975, the destination was pushed even farther with Mission to Mars. The rocket took off for good in 1966 to make way for the New Tomorrowland."
Also sold at Company D at Walt Disney World (Disney / MGM). The set of five pins was sold for $20.00 at both locations.
